That time of the year is almost upon us – summer sports days at school! Kids love having the day off lessons so they can do some sport instead. And parents and relatives love spending the day out on the sports field watching all the kids race and play different matches! It’s a fab way to spend a hot summer’s day.


As you will all be outside for a long period of time, it is important that you and your children take some important precautions so that you don’t end up suffering from heatstroke or sunburn. This is especially important for your children as they will be exerting themselves in all that exercise! Here are some great tips that should help you both staying as cool as a cucumber.

Stay Hydrated


One of the most important things you and your children need to do in order to beat the heat is to stay well-hydrated throughout the day. This is extremely important for your children as they will be exercising a lot, so their bodies will need a lot more water than normal. Most schools offer free refreshments on sports day, but it’s a good idea to take your own bottles of water so that you have plenty to drink. You might also want to add a sprinkle of salt to your children’s water as this will prevent them from suffering cramps during their races.


Wear Appropriate Clothing


It’s important that both you and your children wear appropriate clothing. Your children should wear lightweight sports clothes. Most schools ask their pupils to come in the kit that they have to wear during sports lessons. You will be able to find good deals on name brand sundresses at many different online shops. When you are looking for a light dress to wear, make sure that it is made from natural fabrics and materials as these will keep you cooler than if you had worn synthetics.



It’s The Taking Part That Counts!


Kids can be very competitive indeed and they will no doubt want to beat all of their classmates in their races! However, if they push themselves too far, they will end up feeling the heat a lot and could end up even fainting. So, it’s best to reinforce the idea that it is the taking part that counts, and not the winning. Then your children will perform at a pace that suits their bodies i the summer heat.


Encourage The School To Set Up Water Stations


As already mentioned, most schools provide refreshments on sports day. Some even add water stations along race routes so the kids can grab a refreshing drink to keep them going. If your school isn’t planning on adding water stations, it’s a good idea to try and encourage them to do so. They will go down very well with the kids if it is an exceptionally hot day!
